Who
I'm Hamish! I take photos of abandoned shoes and I write for my website wearshoeswritepoems.com. I’ve been doing both for a while now and I think it’s important to hold a space outside of traditional platforms.
Carries
My 100 year old train whistle. Luckily I’ve not had to use it in any emergency situations, it just acts as a fun addition to my backpack for now.
It reminds me of this gentleman I worked with called John Mott, someone I now consider a friend. I bought it the day he told me he invented the first light up shoe. That conversation sparked the start of a project which ended up with me documenting his story. It was the break I needed, one that landed me a where I am today, writing about shoes.
Keeps
I’ve got a sock from a past lover still sitting in my sock drawer somewhere. I should’ve thrown it out ages ago. I come across it every six months when I’m forced to sort through the mess, and it always hits me with this small wave of nostalgia. It’s a nice reminder of them, and of that time.
I’d actually recommend it, leave something sentimental in your sock drawer so you get that same little moment when you least expect it.
